SteadyMate Walker Coming Soon! Walking Between Parallel Bars Improving

In Physiotherapy I’m continuing to make progress walking between the parallel bars, the SteadyMate Walker coming soon hopefully. The physiotherapists are thinking within the next 4 weeks. That sounds so good! Doesn’t seem real actually. Could I finally be getting one step closer to walking and to soon go back home again. That would be amazing!

When I was walking between parallel bars, they were impressed today. It’s all coming together. They’ve seen past patients here at Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Centre and they know when people are close. They’ve helped people walk again from having a severe case of Guillain Barre Syndrome just like me. The last guy that was here with Guillain Barre was here for 193 days, roughly 6 1/2 months. I’ve been here as of today 133 days here at the Stan Cassidy Centre. Using this man as a baseline would explain a little bit why my discharge date has been set for April 10, 2020. The would be the exact days this man was here for. That would give me 1 month walking using the SteadyMate Walker and an extra month walking around the unit getting more practice and feeling more comfortable and working on endurance.

SteadyMate Walker

In Physiotherapy they always joke with me as I don’t show much enthusiasm or emotion when I do things. The truth is I’m hard on myself, I’m working towards the end goal and don’t want to feel let down till I accomplish what I’m here for. When I’m walking, walking out of here, it will be the best day of my life. At that moment I’ll be like, “ I did it!” I’ll celebrate then but till then I’m focused and determined to get where I need to be.

I’m happy that I see the progress and feel close but I’m not celebrating yet. I still have a long road ahead with plenty of rehab even when I get out of here. Still lots of work still ahead. I just wish my hands, fingers and wrists would come back quicker. A person doesn’t realize how much you need something till there gone.

My Guillain Barre Recovery is coming along pretty good. Hopefully soon as mentioned I’ll be in the SteadyMate Walker. As the physiotherapists would say is that I graduated from parallel bars to the SteadyMate Walker. One day at a time but hopefully I’m in my home stretch and 60 days I could be going home maybe depending on how my progress continues. In my mind I think 90 more days is needed, so May, but we’ll see how things go. After being in the hospital for so long, since August 1st, 2019, the thought of being home in 60 days feels some good. That day of me potentially going home doesn’t seem so far away now.

X-ray Left Knee Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital Fredericton

Well today I got called over for an X-ray for my left knee pain I’ve been having at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton. The nurses here at the Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation took me over. It was a very quick x-ray. I was literally in there for 2 minutes.

X-ray left knee

The x-ray was normal, so I will have to wait and see what the doctors do now. The last time we spoke an MRI would be ordered if nothing came back in the x-ray. Hopefully being a patient here at The Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Centre I will be able to get in soon. Apparently at the Fredericton Hospital there’s a long waiting list for MRI’s. They are currently overcapacity, more patients than beds.

In the meantime in Physiotherapy I am only walking between the parallel bars every few days now. They don’t want to push my knee further but at same time they don’t wanna lose any progress I’ve made. It seems to only bother me when I put weight on my left leg. I’m putting more weight through my legs, which hopefully they are just weak. Definitely don’t want anything slowing me down from my recovery with Guillain Barre Syndrome. I’ll be talking more with the doctor come Monday.

SciFit Recumbent Stepper 8.77 Miles 60 Minutes – New Best

On the SciFit recumbent stepper I had a new personal best of 8.77 miles (14.11 kms.) in 60 minutes. The physiotherapists allowed me extra time on the SciFit bike at the end of the day following my 30 minute session. My previous best on the SciFit bike was 6.2 miles in 53 minutes. I’m definitely working hard towards my recovery from Guillain Barre Syndrome.

With my left knee pain in Physiotherapy when I put weight on it walking between the parallel bars I figured I would do some more time on the bike to help strengthen my knee today. The SciFit recumbent stepper is one piece of exercise equipment that I love in the gym. I have to try and do something. It may just need more strengthening which may stop the pain I’m having. My physiotherapist told me at the doctors will be doing an x-ray here soon just to make sure everything is OK. Hopefully we’ll get this all figured out to prevent any further issues or delays in my recovery from GBS. Just waiting on the x-ray now.
